Why Do You Need Pet Insurance for Older Pets?
Pet insurance for older dogs, cats or rabbits is important as your best friend is more prone to health issues as they head into their golden years. Serious conditions like these could stop your pooch, bunny or pussycat in their tracks:
- Cancer
- Gum disease
- Heart disease
- Kidney issues
- Arthritis
- Degenerative joint disease
- Dementia
Pre-existing conditions are not covered. But when new issues like those listed above come calling, you want to focus on your companion's care, not expensive vet bills. That's where older pet insurance from Everypaw comes in.

What's Not Covered?
Now that you know everything you're protected against, it's only fair that we tell you what's not included in your old pet insurance policy - because we can't be everywhere, right?!
- Treatment for pre-existing conditions.
- Treatment for poisoning occuring in the first 3 days of the policy.*
- Treatment for accidental injury that occurs in the first 3 days of the policy.*
- Treatment for any illness that occurs in the first 14 days of your policy.*
- Treatment related to conditions that routine vaccinations could've prevented.
*Having said that. If you're switching to Everypaw and can prove that your previous insurance ran for more than 14 days up to the start date of your new policy, with no gaps in cover, these exclusions won't apply.

Older Pet Insurance: FAQs
There is no upper age limit on our dog, cat or rabbit insurance. While many providers choose not to cover older pets, due to increases in costs attached to treating age-related conditions, we don’t believe that’s fair.
At Everypaw, we want to be there for you and your furry friend at every stage of your journey together. That’s why we offer pet insurance with no upper age limits on new policies.
Each insurance company will have its own rules on what is an ‘old’ pet. However, here at Everypaw, we believe that age is just a number. We’re all about fur-ever pet insurance, that’s why we offer cover for cats, dogs and rabbits regardless of age.
Insuring older pets can be worthwhile, especially as they’re more prone to illness and injury as they get older.
Vet bills can be costly and, unfortunately, the number of times you'll find yourself in the vet waiting room increases as your treat-seeking companion gets older.
We're very much about the here and now. Like many UK pet insurers, we don't cover pre-existing conditions. This includes any illness, injury or symptom your pet has suffered before you take out an Everypaw policy.
Not that we don't trust you or anything, but we also check with vets to ensure your senior friend doesn't have any skeletons in their treatment closet.
If you've switched to Everypaw from another policy that's more than 14 days old and can prove that your previous policy runs up to the start date of the new policy, with no gap in cover, then you'll be covered straight away.
But if you've taken out a new pet insurance policy for older pets or there are gaps in your cover, you won't be covered against treatment for poisoning or accidents in the first 3 days of the policy. You also won't be protected against treatment for illnesses in the first 14 days of the policy.
Our pet insurance for older rabbits, dogs and cats can cover or contribute towards the cost of vet fees for the treatment of illnesses, injuries and conditions up to the limit amount you choose.
But we don't just help with expensive vet fees. Our policies also come with a list of additional benefits to help make caring for your older cat or dog easier, including:
- Help with complementary treatments included as part of your vet fee cover such as physio.
- Dental cover included as part of your vet fee cover.
- 24/7 access to qualified vets and vet nurses, as well as pet bereavement services via Petcall.
- Simple policy tracking and management in the Pet Portal.
It's worth mentioning that if you want to submit a claim by downloading a form, this process could take longer than submitting online.
We know that caring for an old dog, rabbit or cat isn't easy or cheap. That's why we're there for you every step of the way, just like you are for them.
